  Why is R named R?

  The name is partly inspired by the first names of the original two R writers, Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka and somewhat a play on the Bell Labs language name “S”. S is a high-level language and graphics and data analysis environment. It is a sophisticated, widely used software system with a sound conceptual design.
