Tanzania is pioneering sickle cell treatment in Africa.
With 11,000+ births affected annually, Tanzania has built one of the largest SCD treatment centers globally, offering exchange blood transfusion (ExBT) & stem cell transplants (HSCT). Since 2021, 1,500 patients screened, 157 identified for advanced therapy, and 22 successfully treated with ExBT. Scaling these treatments continent-wide requires stronger healthcare infrastructure, policy investment & ethical access.
