Why Are African Researchers Left Behind in Global Scientific Publications?
Africa’s research output doubled in a decade, so why does it still feel like we’re invisible in global science?
Between 2005 and 2016, Africa’s share of global scientific publications grew from 1.5% to 3.2%. That’s a 100%+ increase in just over a decade.
On paper? Progress.
In reality? We still represent a tiny fraction of the world’s research output while carrying one of the heaviest disease burdens on the planet.
So here’s the question we want to sit with today
What is the single biggest barrier stopping African researchers from publishing more, and what would actually fix it?
Is it funding? Access to journals? Time? Institutional support? Collaboration gaps? Language barriers? Or something else entirely that doesn’t get talked about enough?
Drop your thoughts below.
